WINNETKA, Ill. — A recovery mission for a missing swimmer in Lake Michigan in Winnetka has wrapped for the day with hopes that efforts will resume Wednesday morning. Fire crews had been at Elder Lane Beach for several hours searching for a man they believed to be in his 20s. However, family members told WGN the man had just turned 19.Authorities received a call around 2:15 a.m. after three men went into the lake near the pier to go swimming. One of them was reportedly pulled under and has not yet resurfaced.Winnetka Fire Chief John Ripka said crews started shore searches immediately after they got the call. Authorities attempted to launch a boat but the waves, estimated to be between six and eight-feet currently, made it too dangerous. LA PORTE, Ind. (WXIN) — An Indiana mother has joined the father of her child in pleading guilty in connection to the torture death of their 4-year-old son who was kept in a dark basement, bound in duct tape and starved and beaten by his parents. Mary Yoder, 27, of La Porte was charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a Level 1 felony, and neglect of a dependent, a Level 5 felony, along with two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to an animal and failure to make a report. On Friday, the Times of Northwest Indiana reported that Yoder appeared before a judge in La Porte County and pleaded guilty to both felony counts. She faces up to 40 years in prison on her more serious charge. The child's father, Alan Morgan, pleaded guilty to murder and battery of a child on Nov. 29, 2022, along with resisting law enforcement. He was sentenced to 70 years in prison. HORSESHOE BAY, Texas (KXAN) -- The Horseshoe Bay Police Department is investigating a drowning that happened last week at an apartment complex pool, according to a HBPD news release.On Aug. 10, the HBPD, Horseshoe Bay Fire and EMS were dispatched to the pool area of an apartment complex, 401 Green Leaf in Horseshoe Bay, the release said. When officers arrived on the scene, they saw two males in the pool. One was holding the other attempting resuscitation efforts, according to police. Officers pulled one male, Jose Samuel Gomez Zamora, from the pool, who was unresponsive, police said. Officers began CPR on Zamora until first responders arrived.The second male, Juan Gallo Melendez, said he and Zamora went swimming in the pool, and he lost sight of Zamora, according to police. The Minnesota Department of Human Rights said Tuesday that a lawsuit and consent decree has led to changes at CSL Plasma so transgender and nonbinary donors will not be turned away because of their gender identity.“Today we celebrate the progress that has been made so that trans and non-binary Minnesotans can live with dignity, free from discrimination,” Rebecca Lucero, state Department of Human Rights commissioner, said in a statement.The case involves Alice James who was born biologically male and had donated plasma at the CSL location in Duluth about twice a week from 2011 until June 2015.
