LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Pac-12 Conference is falling apart, but coaches are still interested in playing West Coast schools even as they go their separate ways.Arizona and UCLA, in particular, plan to continue to play each other.“I’m confident it will happen,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said Wednesday at Pac-12 media day. “We need to sit down and hammer out exactly what it’s going to look like, but there’s so much change going on. First off, I want to figure out what the Big 12 schedule is going to look like. (Cronin) probably wants to know what his Big Ten schedule will look like. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves picked right-hander Bryce Elder to start Game 3 of the NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.Elder (12-4, 3.81 ERA) struggled down the stretch after pitching a career-high 174 2/3 innings in his first full season in the big leagues. But the Braves decided he was the best choice to face Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola (12-9, 4.46).Elder, who was sent down to Triple-A Gwinnett during spring training, was a surprising success over the first half of the season after being recalled to Atlanta. He was chosen for the All-Star Game and helped the Braves deal with injuries to Kyle Wright and Max Fried.Manager Brian Snitker said he made the decision because he liked Elder’s performance in intrasquad games the Braves played to stay sharp during their off week.“I think we just kind of felt like after the way he threw at the intrasquad and with the layoff, that he was the guy,” Snitker said. “He’s been a starter for us all year. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas announced Wednesday that an independent panel has downgraded five Level I violations lodged by the NCAA against the men’s basketball program and Jayhawks coach Bill Self, ending a years-long saga by giving KU three years of probation and no other penalties. The Jayhawks announced the details shortly before a scheduled news conference with panel officials. The school had appealed the violations, which sprung from a 2017 investigation into college basketball corruption, through the Independent Accountability Review Process that was created to handle complex cases. Among the NCAA charges was a lack of institutional control and an allegation that Self failed in his responsibility to keep the program in compliance. The case hinged on whether representatives of the apparel company Adidas were considered boosters — the school contends they were not — when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits.
